First of all, everyone at BQ Watches would like to wish you a Happy New Year, and 2017 is certainly one that we are all looking forward to!
With this thought in mind, we thought it would be the ideal time to look ahead to some of the iconic luxury watch collections that will be celebrating significant anniversaries this year, with timepieces from Rolex, Omega and Cartier featuring.
Rolex Sea-Dweller (1967) | 50 Years
We start our list with a big one. The instantly-recognisable Sea-Dweller celebrates its half-century in 2017, and the Rolex icon has seen its value skyrocket in auction rooms around the globe over the last few years.
Now renowned for its signature helium escape valve, the deep-sea diving collection was last updated in 2014 with the Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller 4000, and the relatively recent introduction could potentially put the brakes on a commemorative special edition in 2017.
Further to this, Rolex have always celebrated their achievements on their own terms. When their esteemed Daytona also celebrated its 50th anniversary back in 2013, but the expected platinum model with cerachrom bezel was not unveiled until Baselworld last year.
If we luxury watch fans are lucky enough to see a celebratory Sea-Dweller this year, it is likely that it will be in the same vein as the Daytona, available in extremely limited numbers and presented in a noble material.
Omega Speedmaster (1957) | 60 Years
One of the world’s most important watches, the Omega Speedmaster, was released 60 years ago. For the Swiss brand’s countless loyal fans, this should prove to be very exciting news thanks to the watchmaker’s penchant for commemorative watches.
It will be particularly interesting to see if an anniversary model can truly distinguish itself from the countless variations of the Speedmaster that we have had the pleasure to see over the years. Many consider the benchmark commemorative edition to be the Speedmaster ’57, which apart from the original movement, had everything a faithful re-edition should.
2017 also sees the Omega Seamaster 300 and the Railmaster celebrating their 60th anniversary, so it should prove to be a fruitful year for Omega admirers.
Cartier Tank (1917) | 100 Years
The Cartier Tank was first introduced by the French watchmaker in the midst of the First World War, with the design cues drawing inspiration from the French military tanks manufactured by Renault.
The brand has made the decision recently to focus on new product lines and complications as opposed to drawing from their rich and fascinating history.
However, the centenary of such an important watch surely will not go unmentioned, and it would not be a surprise to see a limited-edition Cartier Tank introduced alongside the Minute Repeater Mysterious Double Tourbillon at SIHH 2017.
