For many luxury watch aficionados, the Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona is the ultimate collectable timepiece.

In October, renowned auction house Phillips will provide one lucky collector with the opportunity to become the owner of one of the Hollywood legend’s actual Daytona watches. Although, this specific Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref 6239 will not come cheap.

The Daytona will undoubtedly be the standout lot at the upcoming “Winning Icons: Legendary Watches of the 20th Century”, an auction that will see 50 rare and collectable watches go under the hammer in New York.

This is the first time that the watch has ever been auctioned, and pre-auction estimates that Paul Newman’s beloved Daytona could fetch in excess of $1million.

The Rolex Daytona collection was introduced by the iconic Swiss watchmaker in 1962, the same year that the brand took over the reins of Official Timekeeper at the prestigious Daytona 500 auto race.

As such, the collection was initially designed to be used exclusively by racing drivers, which can go a long way to explaining the significantly larger tachymeter scale on the bezel. The scale is utilised to calculate a range of important statistics, such average speed, and its enhanced size makes it more legible at speed.

While Paul Newman was an icon throughout the world for his acting prowess, many will also be aware that he was also a successful racing driver, competing and winning at Lime Rock at the age of 81. Furthermore, Newman also competed at the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans, a race noted for its gruelling day-long duration, where he secured an impressive runners-up spot on the podium.

Newman wore his own Daytona ref 6239 while racing, and this led to collectors nicknaming this style of Daytona the “Paul Newman”. This particular type of Daytona is instantly recognisable thanks to the contrastingly coloured seconds scale around the edges of the dial.

This Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona ref 6239 will be auctioned at “Winning Icons: Legendary Watches of the 20th Century”, which will be hosted in Phillips’ New York salesroom on October 26th, 2017.
