The chronograph is often heralded as one of the more popular functions to have on a luxury watch, with only the date window considered to be more in demand. The chronograph function can also play a vital part in the wearer’s daily routine, as it can be utilised to accurately time both work and sports-related activities.
In this week’s BQ Watches Blog, we will be showcasing the top 3 iconic chronograph watches, with all 3 examples displaying the timeless and instantly recognisable aesthetics required to be considered a classic.
Omega Speedmaster Professional
Originally introduced for race car drivers in 1957, the Omega Speedmaster Professional made its name as the watch of choice for NASA astronauts in 1965, with the moniker the “Moonwatch” still proving popular today.
In fact, the Speedmaster played an important role in the almost ill-fated Apollo 13 mission in 1970, with its accurate timekeeping abilities proving invaluable to the spacecraft’s re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.
While it is entirely possible that another chronograph could have performed as well in this critical situation, the Omega Speedmaster was the only watch to pass the space agency’s thorough testing procedures in pursuit of their space-worthy chronograph.
The design of the Speedmaster has not drastically changed since it was introduced, with only minor details being altered.
The oldest Chronograph to appear on this list is the exemplary Breitling Navitimer, which was introduced by the
Swiss watchmaker in 1952.
The robust functionality of the Navitimer, which was originally designed for pilots, ensured the collection would go on to be a success.
The main feature, along with the chronograph function, was the inclusion of a slide rule bezel. This simple feature proved invaluable to pilots, as it allowed for important calculations such as ground speed, fuel consumption, miles per minute, and other important figures.
Throughout the years, the Navitimer has seen several alterations, but the classic and tasteful styling remains a hallmark of the collection.
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
Topping our list is the exceptional Rolex Daytona, with the much sought-after chronograph celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
As such, Rolex introduced an exquisite all-platinum edition this year, which has been accentuated tastefully with an ice blue dial and chestnut-coloured bezel.
Boasting the formidable timekeeping qualities you would expect from the Swiss brand, the popularity of the Daytona really took off when Hollywood actor Paul Newman started to wear one on his wrist.
The Daytona remains as one of the most popular watches, chronograph or otherwise, in the world, and old and new models alike continue to fetch very high prices at auctions around the world.
